Hillman, the eponym for the Cleveland headquarters of the ACWA, was a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant to the U.S., who was a founder and long-time president of the international union. Active beyond the shops of the men's garment industry, Hillman was a very close adviser to President Franklin Roosevelt, a central figure in the creation of the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations), and a prominent spokesman for social unionism, i.e., the belief that unions should provide their members with more than improved wages and hours, such as cooperative housing and banking, as well as cultural and educational offerings. | Source: findagrave.comDownload Original File
