Ernst co-founded the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, helped bring the Republican National Convention to Cleveland in 1936, and was among the organizers of the Great Lakes Exhibition in 1936-37. Ernst's hobby was breeding and racing horses. He owned a breeding farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and a racing stable on Long Island. The names of each of his horses began with the letters AL - Alorter, Alquest and Alablue, to name a few. Several were winners, including Aletern, who placed first in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park on May 30, 1944. Engraved by E. G.
