While the interior of Stone Mad Pub has been renovated, the structure's original tin ceiling was saved. Tin ceilings were a lightweight, durable, and less expensive alternative to ornate plaster designs for America's emerging middle class during the second half of the 19th century. Unique to North America, the manufacturing of tin ceilings was generally confined to industrialized areas along railroad lines, such as Ohio. The popularity of tin ceilings coincided with the development of new techniques to process tin and fabricate sheet metal.
