Albert Schlegel, a native of Cleveland, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot during World War II, where he earned "ace" status and was credited with shooting down 15 enemy planes before losing his life in Germany. Capt. Schlegel was honored in 1949 when the U.S. government renamed Cleveland Air Force Base as Schlegel Air Force Base. The base was established in 1948 but was short-lived.
