The Onoko

The Onoko
It was the first large commercial freighter on the Great Lakes whose hull was constructed entirely with iron. The ship was built in 1881-1882 by the Globe Ship Building Co. It sailed the Great Lakes until 1915, when it sank in Lake Superior after it developed a leak. This image of the ship shown with its original rigging was painted in 1920. | Source: Bowling Green State University, Historical Collections of the Great Lakes
