John Dempsey's wife was a second generation Irish-American. They met in Sandusky, Ohio, and married in Richland County in 1856. They were the parents of four children that survived to adulthood, the oldest James H. Dempsey born in 1859. Martha sadly witnessed the death of her oldest daughter, Mary Katherine, in 1898.
